Types of Air Conditioners

There are 3 main types of air conditioners:

  • Central Air Conditioners  – Most homes in Michigan have central air.  In climates where air conditioners run year round, consumers can expect to replace them about every 10 years.  In Michigan, however, a properly maintained central air conditioner should last upwards of 15 years.   While we can install, replace, and repair all types of air conditioners, RP Carder Mechanical is currently the only independent licensed American Standard Dealer in Michigan.
  • Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners –  A good air conditioning option for rooms that a challenge to cool are ductless mini-split systems.  They are an excellent option between central and room air conditioners.  They are quiet, efficient, vent to the outside with no duct work, and provide excellent temperature control.  RP Carder Mechanical specializes in residential and commercial ductless systems.  We are a Mitsubishi Residential and Light Commercial Diamond Contractor and City-Multi Diamond Contractor – bringing you the best in service and warranties.
  • Room Air Conditioners – Room air conditioners are another option and can be installed yourself.  When considering a room vs. ductless air conditioner, there are a few key things to consider.  With a ductless split system, since the compressor sits outside, and the units are very quiet and efficient.  The indoor units do not need to vent through an exterior wall, so ductless splits are a good option to cool rooms with no windows and no exterior walls. A ductless split system also provides more temperature control because each indoor unit can be set independently from the other units.

Selecting an Air Conditioner

We know energy-efficiency and money-savings is of utmost importance when it comes to air conditioning.   Here are some additional things to consider when selecting and sizing an air conditioner or air conditioning system:

  • Energy Efficiency
  • Sun and shade conditions
  • Number of occupants
  • Noise
  • Size of space
  • Is supplemental cooling needed?
  • Electrical requirements
  • Desired features, such as variable fan speeds, programmable, remote controlled, easy to access filters,  sleep setting – energy saving setting, quiet operation.
